The planet Telia
Telia is a night world in the Formosa sector, overlooking Port Belian, the only space station in the Formosa sector capable of harbouring Oberon class battleships and larger vessels. Telia orbits the nearby star at roughly the same distance as Venus is to the Sun. Normally this would mean that the planet is completely inhospitable but the slow revolution time around the star means that it is always facing the same way towards the star. The illuminated face of the planet is completely iinhospitable but the dark side is bearable with temperatures ranging from 80 Celsius at the poles to 30 Celsius at the equator.
Since there isn't a natural day or night on Telia, "day" is dictated as the city lights being on and "night" as lights out. This also means that there are no time zones on Telia. It is forbidden to use any kind of light source during "night" in city areas. THis ensures that citizens get to rest properly. Using lights is still permissible outside city areas.
Due to the continuous darkness Telia isn't a very fertile planet, but it still habits a special species of pine tree that requires practically no light and relies on the mineral-rich soil of Telia to grow. Telia is also a very mountaineous planet, the mountain ranges cover most of the area. Typically the mountains are around two to three kilometres high but the highest peaks reach to a height of 23 kilometres! Near the southern pole of Telia is located a zone known as LaCrosse's Valley. This valley is 138 km long and 57 km wide and it is the site for the only space port on the planet. It is in LaCrosse's Valley where the Telian regiments are boarded in space vessels and then transported to whereever their combat abilities are needed.
The Night of Betrayal
The Night of Betrayal is so far the only really dangerous attack made at Telia. A number of citizens had turned away from the Emperor's guidance, choosing to worship the foul daemon-gods of Chaos instead. They managed to open a part for the Daemons of Chaos, from which countless daemons surged and soon the entire capital was in disorder. It looked like the whole planet was going to fall under the veil of Chaos.
But, after weeks of desperate fighting by the Telian regiments and the timely intervention by Inquisitor Lord Torquemada Coteaz himself carried th day for forces of the Imperium. However, the cost of this victory was great indeed, for the capital of Telian lay completely ruined and three complete regiments of Telian troops were lost. To the Telians, this was a massive blow because even before the incident the Telian consisted of eight regiments of troops and now only a bit above 60% of them were left.
After the Night of Betrayal Ordo Malleus founded an Inquisitorial Palace, around which the capital of Telia, Hafenkratz, was rebuilt. After that Telia has remained a permanent base of operations for the Ordio Malleus. Inquisitor Lord Torquemada Coteaz, being the High Protector of the Formosa Sector, has close ties with Telia and has a permanent post in the planetary council.
Telian training
Telian troops are very well trained and are capable of completing a wide variety of tasks, ranging from regimental-size battlefield operations to five-man reconnaissance missions. All Telian troops complete a basic training programme that includes weapon handling, long marches in difficult rocky terrain and long patrol missions without extensive support and supplies. Naturally the majority of training is done in complete darkness. This gives Telian troops good, all-round training and the capability to act according to their own initiative and survive without support. This basic training takes one year to complete and after it the trooper may be called to service in any of the regiments, excluding the first regiment.
Optionally, the soldier may continue his training and complete the second-level training programme. This includes special weapons training and/or extensive reconnaissane training. To qualify for the reconnaissance training, the trooper must first complete a special qualification test that is unique to Telia. The soldier must hunt down a species of creature known as Nightleaper. Nightleapers are native animals to Telia. They are not dangerous, but are really quick, shy and they have excellent sight and hearing. The soldier must hunt down one of these creatures, armed only with his bayonet knife and lasgun with a single ammo pack.
Usually it takes about two or three weeks for a soldier to complete this task, but the most famous attempt was by a certain Telian soldier. He ran out of ammo and it took him almost two years to complete the mission. This certain individual is nowadays the commander of the 1st company of the Telian 1st Regiment, usually known as the Veteran Company.
Needless to say, the soldiers who complete the second-level training are skilled and determined individuals. They are usually recruited to perform some kind of specialist task in the regiment.
Company Composition
A Telian Company consists of a main part flanked by one or two smaller parts. The main part usually consists of an Infantry Platoon with some armoured support in the form of Hellhounds, Sentinels or Chimeras. Heavier tanks and artillery is rarely used because they are not so useful in mountaineous terrain. The flanking parts are usually a small Infantry Platoon supported by some weapon teams detached from the Company Command.
Storm Troopers, locally referred to as Black Troopers feature heavily in Telian companies due to the fact that Storm Troopers are actually trained on Telia. These Storm Troopers are usually used as forward infiltrators. Grav-chute deployment is extremely rare because of the mountaineous terrain which almost completely prevents the use of grav-chutes.
All in all, Telian battle strategy relies more on reconnaissance and squad cooperation than pure firepower.
