[FB] Bretonnia vs ogres - englantia
Lähetetty: Ma 31.10.2005 22:09
Recently I bought myself bunch of bretonnia models(though don't ask me why
Inspiration of moment) so as I had game in few days decided to field them for a test game. Unfortunatly didn't have time to read bretonnia rules through first(I had barely unpacked after car drive from one city to another) so it caused some funny suprises(luckily opponent was far more knowledgeable about bretonnia rules details than I was
). Here's the army I took. Unfortunatly no infantry for though deal I had was very good it didn't include men-at-arms or bowmen. Something to fix ASAP.

Bit short of points since I had to finalise list in a hurry(hadn't time for that either. Original list was few points over so just removed sword of might from ASB). Opponent took ogre kingdom army with him.
Bruiser w/ironfist and US6 thingie
Butcher w/unknown stuff
EIGHT bulls w/full command and ironfists
4 ironguts w/full command
big unit of gnoblars
some gnoblar trappers
3 yhetees(proxied by ogre models which caused myself made mistake. Note to himself. Pay attention to opponent when he describes his army. You can work out your army after that
)
3 maneaters w/catayan swords(?) - Now THESE I noted. I have had one...bad...experience with these guys some time ago.
3 leadbelches - My friend shouldn't be allowed to field anything which applies artirelly dices...
gorger
scrap launcha - Now THIS could cause some funny moments. Killing blow and S3 so only 6+ ward save against it...Wopedoo.
For terrain important features were forrests on both flanks, hill on his DZ and another in center. I also had hill on my DZ and he had house. I made terrain, we diced to see who chooses side and predictably I lost. With roll of 1. Well. I had that habit in summer when we played, I continued it now. Atleast I'm consistent with my pre-game rolls
For spells I got howler wind and master of stone for first sorceress(yea!) and mistress of marsh and master of forrest for second. Overall good set of spells. Pity I didn't realise sooner just how good set it was.
Anyway deployment. Ogres starting from left and going to right(my POV): Leadbelchers, bruiser, then gnoblar screen behind which was first ironguts and then bulls. Butcher behind them. Then trappers and scraplauncha. Yhetees and maneaters behind forrest(note. I still didn't get around my brains those were yhetees and could just ignore difficult terrain when they deployed behind forrest. One can see I hadn't played more than 1 game of FB in past 2 months).
For bretonnia I had KOTR unit with sorceress #2 on left, then KOTR unit w/ASB, questing knights(note. In single line rather than lance formation), general(alone since I wanted to go and get that bruiser into contact with him), errant block with sorceress #1, grail knights(these were in lance formation), pegasus hero. Pegasus knights were behind errant knights.
Obviously I prayed for the Lady of The Lake. That is given for me regardless of what's on opponents army. Too stylish not to.
Ogres #1:
Very minor advancement forward. Magic was easily dispelled barring for +1T spell that got through into ironguts. Scraplauncha got one knight errant and hit general as well. For a second I had nightmare of killing blow taking him(note to himself. Do not deploy independent characters near big juicy units when there's killing blow template weapons out there).
Bretonnia #1:
Not much of suprise in my tactic. All ahead full. Pegasus hero flew past the forrest on right to look at maneaters. Two things to note: 1) I still ignored the fact those ogre models which had advanced partly behind forrest were yhetees and could move through it like nothing) and 2) if I had realised just how good magic chances I had I would have held back a bit and tried to soften ogre units with magic and clear scraplauncha with pegasus knights and gnoblar line with general. Ah well.
So into magic. I cast both offensive spells. Forrest was dispelled but stone hit bruiser head on. 3 wounds caused! This made me WAIT for his magic phase for I had funny item waiting to be used...
Ogres #2:
Yhetees charged into pegasus knights...Whooops! Yep. I couldn't believe how stupid I had been...Though it tempted no true Bretonnian knight flees from charge so they stood...No sight of gorger and with that it was pretty much it. So onto magic. I still didn't employ chalice(reason for first turn: I forgot it...). When he tried to heal him first up I used silver mirror. Now one 3+ roll and I have killed enemy wizard in record time...Of course I rolled 2...And the butcher had moved into bulls as well...Sigh. However rest of phase went well enough and in the end I could even dispel the remain in play spell. In shooting scraplauncha got good hit against grail knights and killed one. Poor hero...
Yhetees quite obviously ran over pegasus knights without breaking a sweat.
Bretonnia #2:
Time for gloooorious charges. Pegasus hero charged without fear against maneater(stupid ninja-wannabes anyway. Take some bretonnian steel instead! Time to settle some old scores...). Errants charged gnoblar trappers(hey somebody had to do that anyway) who fled like rats. Questing knights and KOTR unit with ASB charged gnoblar line and to my suprise they opted to stand and shoot against KOTR unit. No harm was done and they crashed in...I thought I would have glorious combat from which to pursue straight into ironguts with KOTR unit and bulls with questing knights(yea bit of overoptimism there)...
However I also charged leadbelchers with second KOTR unit. These guys opted to flee...Running near gnoblars...Getting run down...And from this gnoblars decided to "leg for it" and ran out of combat...Leaving my knight blocks stranded...About inch short of two angry units of ogres...Oh and did I mention one unit was EIGHT strong originally and now had also BUTCHER with them...
Bugger.
And yes. He didn't use general's LD there...
Anyway general moved further toward bruiser(I had less units and had to start deploying so couldn't see where bruiser was when I deployed general) and grail knights turned around to look at yhetees.
Into magic. I hit bull unit with master of stone. Managed to hurt bulls but that's it...Master of forrest fluttered against bruiser.
Combat. Pegasus hero screwed one maneater without problem with his lance. Pegasus survived their attention and they even failed their stubborn break test! Wohoo! They ran 8...And I pursued 7...
Sometimes dices just ain't with you. Atleast scraplauncha failed panic test and ran away.
Ogres #3:
Bruiser & ironguts against KOTR unit. Bruiser into flank. I was pretty confident I could hold since bruiser didn't have GW. Of course I had no idea he had no ranks magic item...Bulls ran against questing knights. Gnoblar units kept running and nearly went offboard. Luckily scraplauncha did. Yhetees turned around and prepared to face The Wrath Of Grail Knights. Maneaters turned and prepared for rerun against bretonnia hero.
Magic nill. I even used chalice this time succesfully. Shooting zip as well. So on to combat. Questing knights lost paragon in challenge but apart from that they survived without harm! Lady protects! One questing knight smashed his two-handed sword into head of butcher and cleaved skull apart. So much for their magic! Alas numbers and overkill saw knights running. Next to them Lady was truly with me for only 2 knights fell! I caused wounds to ironguts and I thought I had 2 ranks+standard+virtue+wound=5 while he would have 2 casualties+outnumber+standard=4. Then of course he revealed his darn magic item so there went my rank bonuses and he had flank so it suddenly was 5-3 against me. There went those knights running as well. Darn! Only good thing was that a) they outran them and b) my general had bruiser now square on his sight...
Bretonnia #3:
While fleeing KOTR unit rallied general charged bruiser(YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAA!!!), KOTR unit with sorceress charged gorger front of them, pegasus hero charged maneaters and Grail Knights charged yhetees. KOTR unit that rallied rallied into single line since I would be charged. Errant unit turned toward bulls since questing knights promptly failed rallying test(which made me wonder. Is rallying test rerollable with questing vow?).
Magic phase. I learned that sorceress in combat can't cast his spells(?). So master of stone dropped 2 bulls...Not enough for panic test...Howler wind was cast to keep bull movement in line.
So let's see if combat phase would ease my pain a bit. First up pegasus hero. Lance hit ogre hard but not hard enough so neither fell...Whoops! This time pegasus didn't survive attention of 2 maneaters with their nasty weapons and was promptly cleaved apart. He had 3 wounds, I had 2 wounds...Bugger. Why o why didn't pegasus have only 2 wounds
Luckily I outran the pursuing ogres.
Gorger combat...ONE stinking wound caused. This would go on forever. In the end of game I had 3 KOTR+sorceress left while I had only 2 wound caused on gorger. No longer won't mention them. Grail Knights promptly cleaved 2 yhetees apart and remaining one ran after not killing single Knight. And then the general combat. After issuing challenge as per virtue requirement I declared he would pull sword of heroes up! Only to be noted that bretonnia characters have to use lance when they charge...Whoops!
Well with the help of virtue I hit and wounded each and every time but his nasty 2+ save modified to 5+ save saved 2. He caused none so I won by 1. I actually hoped he would hold so I could cleave that bloody ogre apart with my hero but of course the ogre spoiled that fun and ran. I ran it down without effort.
Ogres #4:
Ogre ironguts charged against KOTR unit(uh oh here we go). Yhetee rallied. Maneaters charged fleeing bretonnia hero and ran him down(serves him well...coward!). Bulls turned around to face the errant knights...Combat. Bretonnia army standard declared challenge and was promptly cut down by gutlord(ouch). Lost some more knights and remaining 3 ran away from ironguts.
Bretonnia #4:
Questing knights rallied and prepared to charge ironguts. Fleeing KOTR unit rallied. Grail Knights charged yhetee...
Then I declared charge with errants against big ogre unit...And promptly forgot errants are immune to psychology while charging so rolled for fear test and failed it...AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGHHHH!
So with me not remembering that damn rule I had errants front of big bull unit with 2 maneaters(and thus able to remove rank bonuses) in my flank. Gee. I really wish I had had time to read that damn book.
Anyway with this General moved toward bulls since I figured errants might need more help than KOTR unit vs gorger. Magic. I killed another bull(though if I hadn't been so desperate at this point I would have realised to aim at maneaters. But those bulls were top of hill which made me hope I could get panic test but fell one wound short of it...). Howler wind cast up as well(who knows. Maybe they end up short!). Combat. Grail knights made short work of yhetee but for some reason I didn't overrun out of board...
Ogres #5:
Ironguts prepared to face the questing knights. Bulls and maneaters charged errants and bulls were barely in range. AAAARGH! Needless to say errants were broken without mercy and ran away.
Bretonnia #5:
My Grail hero had bulls in sight so charged into back of them. Errant unit rallied(? Not sure. I'm writing this few days after the game). Questing knights charged ironguts but remaining 3 KOTR in support promptly failed their fear test(me hates fear). Grail knights turned around but once again I showed overoptimism and didn't even concider possibility of questing knights losing it and so moved toward bulls DESPITE THEM NEVER REACHING THOSE BULLS!!! Gee. Am I dumb or am I dumb.
Magic zip. Combat. General challenged bull champpion and poor fellow was magic bound to accept it(got to love those gauntlets) and got promptly lance struct in his chest(4 wounds!). I won by 2 but he passed the break test. AAAAAARGH! There went 370 pts from unit itself + 100 pts from banner + 100 pts from preventing capturation of my banner!!!
My friend continues his suprise LD stunts habit I see...
And of course questing knights got beaten down and were killed. Luckily ironguts would not be able to charge grail knights...Or KOTR.
Ogres #6:
Not much of movement. So on to combat. General found himself fighting with bare sword(first time I hoped basic ogres had T5
) and lost combat by 1 and ran from it. Yesh. Ain't it fun? He passes LD5 check, I fail LD8 one...Not to mention all the fear checks I failed(I failed few when he charged me as well but since it didn't have much of impact didn't mention since I have forgotten precicely which combats they were). Oh and of course he was run down...3d6 flee and 2d6 pursuit and I was run down...I thought 3d6 had advantage but from this game looks more like advantage lies on 2d6
Bretonnia #6:
Nothing. Just the gorger combat but didn't end this time either.
End result: Minor loss for bretonnia. Vp's between 500 and 600 so if I had caught those bulls it would have been minor VICTORY for bretonnia(bulls alone would have got into 0 or bit more for bretonnia and no dead general = 350 pts less for ogres). So definetly close game which I managed to lose all due to my stupid mistakes and rule errors. Bugger. But still fun game nevertheless. Now onto painting some bretonnia knights(going to give unique heraldy for each and every knights).
