The escape from dwarrowdelf
Scenario can be found on Fellowship of the Ring supplement so I won't repeat it. Fellowship was deployed in following order: Aragorn and Gimli led the way, then Frodo and Gandalf, behind them remaining 3 hobits and guarding the rear were Legolas and Boromir.
Turn 1:
Fellowship moves 4” forward except for Aragorn who headed full ahead. Gandalf illuminated the darkness with handy spell. After this Goblins rolled to see how many appeared: 6! With this hulking cave troll(crap) and goblin archer appeared from south edge(when he rolled for troll I had momentary nightmare of it appearing behind me).
Turn 2: Moria gets initiave.
Cave troll raced ahead. Goblin slowed down and prepared to shoot. Aragorn slowed his race toward forward and pulled his bow while rest followed. Legolas slowed down as well. Then 3 more goblin archers appeared, one behind the fellowship! Instantly bows were fired but the one behind fellowship missed and other hit Gandalf but failed to wound. Legolas failed to get rid of goblin behind and hulking troll just ignored puny arrow Aragorn fired.
Turn 3: Moria gets initiave.
Troll continued headlong advance. Archers on south put themselves on even better position. Then fellowship moved. Aragorn again cautiously with rest following up. Legolas got left bit behind as he had to give room for Boromir and Gandalf tried sorcerous blast on 2 dices but failed(at which point I sighed relief. I realised I had forgotten THAT one!). 2 goblins with sword appeared from south. Goblin arrows again missed but Legolas got rid off goblin behind them.
Turn 4: Moria still got initiave.
Troll continued advance. Goblins as well. Fellowship advanced and Gandalf dropped the troll into abyss below...I wasn't particulary happy. My mood however lifted when second troll appeared along with spear goblin. Goblin archery proved useless but so did fellowship's archery as well.
Turn 5: Fellowship actually gained initiave!
With this Aragorn raced ahead full speed while rest followed suit. Gandalf cast terrifying aura just for heck of it(:D). Legolas still kept slowing and was now out of Gandalf's light. Goblin archers let sword goblins race ahead while troll reached archers. Then goblin captain and spear goblin appeared from south as well(he declined option to bring spear goblin from north). Legolas failed in shooting utterly but so did goblin archers who opted to shoot at Legolas.
I was in need of chasm and quickly.
Turn 6: Moria got initiave.
Sword goblins raced forward, spear goblin joined to support them. Troll moved further forward while captain reached archers. Then fellowship moved. Aragorn nearly reached goblin swords. Gandalf failed to cast sorcerous blast(thank Sauron). 2 more sword goblins moved from south. Shooting saw Legolas nearly take wound but usage of all of his might saved it...Take goblin might!
Turn 7: Moria retained initiave.
Goblins charged Aragorn(here we go). 2 sword goblins charged and spear joined to support. Gimli couldn't quite join the combat and Aragorns attempt to throw troll out of stairs with 2 dices failed, again. Legolas raced full ahead to get inside comforting cover of Gandal's light. Sword and spear gobbo came from south while sword goblin appeared from north, trying to reach more vulnerable members from behind.
In shooting Legolas was nearly killed(got hit but only rolled 4 on that). In combat phase goblins shielded which wouldn't have been needed as highest Aragorn got was 2!!!!!!! AAAAAGH! Atleast I pushed him back and won some time...
Turn 8: Moria still rules the initiave!
Which doesn't help when there's Aragorn and his free might. He charged one goblin while Gimli charged second. Rest followed and Gandalf's drop Troll tactic was still failing utterly(rolling higher than 2 might help. Hint hint!). Behind combat was getting croweded however. Apart from 2 goblins + spear support there was troll, captain, 3 more goblins and handfull of other goblins nearly there. Consequently it wasn't suprise that when chance came another goblin appeared from south.
In shooting Legolas called for heroic shooting(to keep his life secured by killing those archers) but failed to kill single archer and was slain in return. Whoops for fellowship!
In combat with Aragorn goblin shielded and actually beat Aragorns result. Untill Aragorn opted to use point of might that is! Poor goblin was tore apart. Gimli also beat his foe but failed to kill but he used point of might on principle speed is vital.
Turn 9: Fellowship got the initiave. Still not even near of getting chasm.
Gimli charged spear goblin, Gandalf immobilised troll and Aragorn charged it. Rest of fellowship cramped. Goblins just raced to cause a swarm there while bow goblins wheeled to get sight toward fellowship now that angle wasn't good. 5 reinforcements appeard. Spear and bow goblin from north and sword, spear and bow goblin from south.
Combat. Aragorn won without ease and caused a wound upon hulking monster. Goblin was torn apart and no problemo.
Turn 10: Tie so moria initiave.
Troll charged Aragorn while rest of goblins just raced ahead par the 3 bow goblins on south. Gandalf rolled 1 when trying to immobilise the troll so needed to use 2 points of might but troll now had to face Aragorn AND Gimli. Boromir was acting as rear guard between north goblins and hobits. For further reinforcements goblin captain, sword goblin and 2 spear goblin appeared(note. Only 5 goblin models NOT in game right now). ALL of them rolled 1 when determining where they arrived so north got suddenly lot more dangerous...
No shooting as horde of goblins between bows and targets. And in combat Aragorn single handedly killed the troll(didn't need either Gimli or might). Ouch! Where's that chasm when you need it...
Turn 11: Moria retained the initiave:
Goblin captain charged Gimli and sword goblin aragorn. Both were supported by spear goblins. Behind them solid wall of goblins. On north goblins approached. Only reinforcement this turn was single bow goblin from south.
For fellowship not much except Boromir charged out to attack sword goblin behind the fellowship. This might not have been such a smart move as 5 arrows flew at him but though one hit him shield deflected it.
In combats Aragorn actually was defeated by shielding goblins. Gimli, using his two handed axe, drew combat so goblin was saved from wound only by fate. Boromir slew goblin without problem.
Turn 12: Fellowship won initiave and CHASM APPEARED! Cunningly I positioned it between the fights. Let them fight over THAT!
So without further ado Aragorn charged goblin over the chasm. Gimli backed off at the request of Gandalf who stepped forth and unleashed sorcerous blast. Captain was wounded and another goblin dropped to ground behind him. This wasn't much use when they simply rose again and charged Gandalf who was across the chasm. Further away goblins from north raced toward Boromir who in turn backed back near Gandalf.
Combat. Aragorn slew shielding goblin with ease and jumped across the chasm likewise without problems. Goblin captain that had charged Gandalf got cut down for his effort(pittifull).
Turn 13: Moria retained initiave. Yet another chasm appeared. This one just before last corner before the last sprint.
Aragorn declared heroic move and with this Gandalf jumped across the chasm sending another sorcerous blast(good thing that wizard has only 2 will remaining now) flying. Poor goblin flew 6” and hit 2 spear goblin and bow goblin while at it. Nobody died though but with Aragorn having ”tagged” foremost goblin Gandalf charged against spear goblin on ground and sword goblin. Gimli followed behind to fight against same goblin Aragorn was fighting. Pippin jumped across the chasm as well. Frodo decided to be brave and put himself between lone goblin archer and Sam and Merry.
For goblins this turn consisted north goblins racing ahead. Then third troll appeared! And thankfully from south as well. With Gandalf low on might and will maybe he could even survive now...
Combat. Gandalf vs 3 goblins. One could think I have shot at this? Especially when he rolls 2? Nope. 2, 2, 2. That's my roll. Good thing trapped goblin survived Gandalf's attention.
Gimli declared heroic combat and poor goblin was smashed apart. Gimli then followed against goblin that was lurking near and promptly lost to shielding goblin. So much for dwarven might.
Turn 14: Moria gets the initiave!
Spear goblin got up and charged Gandalf, passing terror test with ease. Sword goblin charged Aragorn and both got supported by spear goblin. With this south movement was cramped enough to stop further moves...On north shield goblin supported by spear goblin charged Boromir. Captain was getting near as well. Luckily for fellowship goblin reinforcements went to trickle and only single sword goblin appeared from south. Shooting useless.
Combat. Boromir slew his foe with ease.
Gimli managed to lose against shielding foe again but getting more than annoyed bumbed with might again. Scratch one goblin! Gandalf lost as well but continuing the trend used point of might and slew the goblin.
Turn 15: Moria retained advantage.
But Aragorn nullified it with heroic move. Gandalf backed up, failing to cast sorcerous blast on the process, and Gimli charged one goblin together with Aragorn(together because only way to get Aragorn into combat legally). Pippin moved behind Aragorn and behind them Sam(needing point of might) and Merry jumped across the chasm.Boromir continued to block the route alone with only he and Frodo on that side of chasm.
Goblins answered by charging Gimli with another goblin and Boromir with captain(supported by spear) and spear goblin. For reinforcements another captain and 2 bow goblins appeared from south.
Shooting. Goblin arrows fell but again totally useless. Bleh! Top of that they were blocking troll!
Combat: Aragorn slew his foe with ease but yet another round of flundering and Gimli lost against SPEAR goblin. 3 attacks vs 1!!!
Without might he was pushed back..
Boromir vs captain. 4 vs 6. So 2 points of might were used from Boromir and another to kill spear goblin. Captain was wounded and fate wasn't kind to him.
Turn 16: Initiave passed to fellowship(drat):
Gimli and Aragorn charged goblin to each. Rest followed behind and Frodo and Boromir jumped across the chasm as well(darn! Where's those 1's when you need them!). Gandalf's spell useless again. In return boromir got charged by captain and 2 sword and 1 spear goblin arrived as reinforcements.
Shooting. Lots and lots of arrows flew. One hit Gandalf but old wizard was protected by his ring of power so no harm. Boromir's armour proved to be equally up to task.
And the unstoppable pair continued their bloody work. Atleast I had again chasm to protect...
Behind them Boromir again got to trouble but 4th point of might and goblin captain was pushed back(hehehehehe).
Turn 17: Moria got initiave.
Bow and shield goblin prepared to face the duo in mortal combat. Boromir got charged by captain and sword goblin, both supported by spear. Another sword goblin charged to south. That area is now FILLED with goblins. Can't move much more models onto area...
Fellowship just moved Aragorn and Gimli into combat and edged inch further. Shooting was useless and Boromir slew captain with ease. Luckily atleast sword goblin survived. Aragorn slew his foe without problem, surviving from jump with equal ease but Gimli managed to miss opponent on other side of chasm.
Turn 18: Fellowship got initiave.
They pretty much stayed put. Gandalf sent sorcerous blast but miraculously due to angle and 1 rolled on the dice troll was still on board! Aragorn charged 2 bow armed goblins so Gimli hadn't chasm to worry anymore. Boromir then got charged by 2 goblins and 1 supporting spear. Another captain then arrived from south.
Shooting useless as usual.
Combat. Aragorn slew his goblin with supreme skill. Gimli did likewise but when he had to cross the chasm he fell! Hooray! One fellowship less to worry about.
Boromir slew his foes with without giving poor goblin a chance. Darn that fighting machine!
Turn 19: Fellowship had the initiave.
Aragorn charged against nearest 2 bow goblins. Gandalf jumped across the chasm. Sorcerous blast attempt failed utterly. Rest of fellowship moved forward as did Boromir, figuring single spear goblin ain't worth of his attention. Goblin decided to show his strenght and charged in. Yet another spear and sword goblin came from south. Things are ”bit” cramped there.
Gobbos managed to hit Boromir, again, but, again, no wound was done.
Boromir then, again, cut poor gobbo to pieces.
Aragorn then fought his combat and with help of free might won it. One bow goblin was cut apart.
Turn 20: Moria got initiave, chasm WOULD have appeared but since south bridge was so cramped put it where it didn't matter.
Goblins shuffled back around troll to clear the way. He charged Aragorn only to be immobilised by thrice darned Gandalf who didn't even need to use last 2nd last non-free will or point of might.
One bow gobbo arrived from north and sword gobbo from south.
In combat Aragorn dealt wound to troll. Not too bad.
Turn 21: Fellowship got the initiave.
Troll was, you guessed it, immobilised. Gandalf and Aragorn then charged it. Behind them hobbits started to jump the chasm and Sam fell(what clumsy foot he is? Second 1 for him...). 2 more bow goblins appeared from north. Shooting useless. Troll was hacked apart by Aragorn, again. What a troll slayer he is?
Turn 22: Fellowship retained the initiave.
Gandalf cast sorcerous blast with use of last point of might. This sent nearest captain out of stairs falling to death...Wizard then backed a bit and let Aragorn charge midst goblins at will.
Merry also fell to his death and I realised I was ONE casualty short of victory...
No reinforcements this time as nobody arrived from north and south there was no room...
Arrows from north hit Frodo(it was him or Gandalf. Not much of a choise). But failed to wound. In combat Aragorn slew another bow goblin with help of free might.
Turn 23: Moria got the initiave.
Swarm of goblins moved ahead to clear bit of room back(maybe for a troll...). Boromir however was able to join combat so I had 2 nuttiest fighters against me...Oh dear.
For reinforcements troll DID arrive!!! Alas shooting again failed to hit anything.
But luck turned with combat against Aragorn as lone goblin actually wounded the mighty hero! Alas 2nd fate point saved him...Boromir cut down bow gobling without effort.
Turn 24: Moria got the initiave.
Swarm charged forward once more. For reinforcements 2 goblins from south and bow from north. Shooting useless. Then Aragorn declared heroic combat and without further ado cut down 2 combats clearing way further. Boromir did likewise and cut down 2 goblins with ease.
Turn 24: Fellowship got the initiave.
Aragorn charged goblin captain while Boromir charged deeper into the mix. Another bow goblin appeared from north. Arrows flew but 1 that hit Gandalf failed to wound him.
Combat. Boromir tried to continue success of his last turn but shielding goblin actually pushed him back! There went Boromir's might...Aragorn however slew goblin captain with help of free might so turn was not without it's success for good guys...
Turn 25: Moria retauned the initiave:
But Aragorn declared with me! Fellowship charged further. Goblin arrows missed. And then 2 more goblins were killed by scarily deadly duo...
Turn 26: Fellowship got the initiave:
So they pushed on. Mere 4” between nearest fellowship and safety...Arrows again flew into nowhere and fellowship started to be out of range...In combat Boromir slew his foe but Aragorn was pushed back by shielding foe...
Turn 27: Moria got advantage!
Which Aragorn neutralised. Gandalf immobilised the troll which Boromir charged while Aragorn charged against annoying goblin. Arrows(all 6 of them) missed.
In combat miracle happened. Troll actually won! Pity he couldn't strike but something...Aragorn slew his foe allright.
Turn 28: Moria got initiave.
And again Aragorn neutered it. Gandalf used 2 will so was up to his last+free might and compelled troll bit forward. This way it blocked way behind and allowed Boromir and Aragorn fight against it undisturbed...Alas didn't get captain reinforcement as I hoped. Troll suffered a wound.
Turn 29: Moria initiave.
And Aragorn heroic. Gandalf immobilised troll with ease. Gandalf was hit by 2 arrows but no harm done. Troll suffered 2nd wound.
Turn 30: No change.
Likewise. No captain in sight, 2 arrows hit, no wound. Only difference is that troll got killed.
Turn 31: Fellowship got initiave to my disaster.
Aragorn and Boromir charged in. Rest followed. I finally got captain as reinforcements while Gandalf was hit three time. One wounded but fate point saved. It's okay. Only 4 turn like this and he's dead.
Aragorn decided to do heroic fight and killed 2 more goblins with ease. Boromir slew another and with this between fellowship and safety was 2 goblins. Sword and captain...
Turn 32: Moria got initiave.
But Aragorn declared With Me! Trying to get more reinforcements goblin captain did likewise. Guess who dice favoured? Yup. Goodies. Aragorn against goblin, Boromir against captain. Arrows useless again.
Aragorn then declared heroic combat. Killing goblin front of him he rushed into combat with captain who had to face the deadly duo alone...Gulp! Predictably being cornered within edge he was slain.
With this route was clear and Aragorn, Boromir, Pippin, Frodo and Gandalf escaped into safety.
Fellowship comments:
Well what can I say. I had three awesome fighting machines available and though Gimli fell to chasm Aragorn alone was enough. End was mostly just hacking my way through swarm of goblins and here free might REALLY came to help. Being able to move before goblins allowed me to actually REDUCE number of goblins front of me. Without it they would charge forward and get reinforcements to fill in. Okay I would have eventually got through(sometimes he would get only 1 reinforcement and would come from north and of course sometimes I would get initiave) but this fastened the process. While goblin arrows aren't dangerous those 6 archers behind me would EVENTUALLY kill Gandalf.
Oh and not a word about Legolas...
Moria comments:
One short of victory. Had I killed Pippin when he was in sight I could have won but as it was I was lucky in chasm rolls anyway. 2 dead fellowship that way is good good.
But without it I had to try to fight fellowship and with heroes like Aragorn there...Not good.
