Omega Legion
Origins:
After hard-won victory of Horus Heresy became apparent, that whole legions had not turned traitor. From every legion remained few loyal marines waitin gfor absolution. As many of them had fought fiercely against their former comrades, it was apparent, that their loyalty was solely for Golden Throne. Chapter formed from these outcasts was named Omega Legion, for they were to be last legion of Space Marines.
These few remaining warriors were granted single, battle-worn battle barge Damocles, and immediately headed off to deep space with orders spread the word of Emperor to distant planets far from battlefields of Heresy. For four millennia Damocles cruised through galaxy fighting all opposition they faced. During this time they gained reputation of resilience and total dedication to their cause. This headstrong attitude was not without flaws and Omega Legion suffered and distant High Lords or Terra heard about grievous losses and victories paid dearly with fallen battlebrothers. It was apparent, that Omega Legion considered its course of action carefully before executing it with clock-like precision.
As galaxy is large place, every news of defeat came as good news to High Lords, who were anxious to declare this soon-to-be-forgotten chapter destroyed. Because of their origin, Omega Legion was unable to gather tithes or locate themselves to permanent location, for many newly created chapters were just as eager to prove themselves in field of battle. High Lords were still able to see number of conquered worlds and destroyed chaos-worshipping warbands and refused to pay serious attention towards their methods.
Omega Legion travelled through space spreading Imperial rule over several, long forgotten worlds until it finally landed on Asthion, renegade planet far from light of Astronomicon. Exact location is unknown, but it is rumored to be one of Ghost Stars in galactic east. How legion was even able to reach these distant stars is mystery, for all known habitants are orks or mutants too far to be cleansed with fire.
Homeworld:
Large planet of Asthion was third planet in system of nine. First it appeared to be verdant and fertile paradise. First explorations confirmed this and small scientific (this concept is unknown to Adeptus Mecganicus) outpost was founded. However this proved to false, as whole crew of outpost disappeared without trace during few hours. Result of this new exploration revealed a world more deadly than any deathworld found within galaxy. Only one, but extremely dominant and genetically simple species organism was reason for this unexpected lethality on enviroment. As these beings reproduced by dividing and were able to mime any necessary items it was impossible to distinguish real items from creatures. Many battlebrothers had casually worn their helmets and fallen to ground, as these flesh-eating creatures attacked fiercely their heads.
As this world was completely uninhabitable even to Orks, it was even more so for Space Marines. From that moment ruling council of Omega Legion decided, that they would never choose to stay in one place. This decision was made to prevent such tradegies from repeating and also to quell curiosity of Imperial organisations. Mostly from Inquisition, which was and still is regarded by Chapter as "useless machine of terror, which creates ten new problems for every old problem it annhilated."
As crusading chapter, Omega Legion has no specific homeworld, but they recruit from every world they visit. Their visits are always brief and hopefully peaceful. If they are greeted openly, they negotiate about trade contacts and recruitment.
Geneseed:
Omega Legions gene-seed is directly taken from various heretics, which remained loyal to Emperor over horrible days of Heresy. As such it is tremendously variable and unpredictable. As Omega Legion was equipped with barely minimum equipment for gene-replication and -engineering it is believed to monitor its processes jealously and weed out ruthlessly all mutations. They also employ all specific modifications used in various traitor legions. As such, Omega Legion has genuine and true World Eaters, Emperor's Children, Night Lords and all other traitor legions within its ranks.
This complex collection of gene-seed and methods has apparently led into heavy degeneration within few specific legions. However it is also proven, that many renegade-marines have found sanctuary within ranks of Omega Legion. Analysis of some slain members of legion has shown great degree of alteration from normal process of marine-creation. It is certain, that filthy heretic Fabius Bile has aided Omega Legion for at least once.
Combat doctrine:
Leaders of Omega Legion were from various heretic legions and as such their expertise was in many realms of warfare. Combining element was their disdain of armored vehicles. Many tasks, which demand rigorous specialization were simply dropped and strict organization of Codex Astartes was equally scrapped. Legion values invidual deeds of valour over organizational successes. Thus many most honored deeds within legion have been minor in their strategic relevance, but display qualities mostly honored. Qualities of bravery, loyalty and skill. Their officers usually fight within tactical groups or accompanied by few, chosen elite of Legion, where their superior skill with their personal weaponry can turn the tide of close combat. Omega Legion considers close combat as barbaric activity, which should not dictate preplanned action on battlefield. Like enigmatic and mercurial primarch of Alpha Legion, Alpharius, Omega Legion believes in preparatory work and thinks warfare only as part of their overall strategy, which is mostly unknown to Imperial scholars. Its efficiency is still without question.
During battle they are fierce and ruthless warriors, which use only total and decisive force against opposition they have decided to crush. These tendencies have made Omega Legion humorless, brooding legion, which is completely unpredictable in battle. Most of their doctrine is adopted from two infamous renegade-primarchs. Use of complex planning is trait learned from Alpha Legion and ruthless execution of these carefully laid plans is adopted directly from Night Lords.
Because of very limited vehicle resource, which tends to consist of dreadnoughts and genuine vehicles of battle, most of legion has to approach enemy on foot. This however works very well with their tendency to use their personal weaponry instead of more specialzed weaponry. Constant shooting is applied to wither enemy weaker before any decisive move is made.
Any battle fought with their terms is ugly affair indeed. Communications are disturbed with endless propaganda and contact is taken in early phase of battle. Enemy is kept on its toes and nervously ignorant about their intentions. Surprise attacks in preplanned locations force enemy to spread its troops wider giving main detachment time to break through weak spot located in enemy defence. Final, decisive attack is supported with withering hail of handgun-fire and heavier weaponry is used to strike keypoints of defence. Terminators arriving via teleport and rapidly approaching Raptors and Berzerkers finish off organized enemy resistance.
Organisation:
Loose organization, which is able to adapt to varying situations is ideal of Omega Legion. All units are encouraged to use its own initiative and creative thinking and ruling officers of Chapter, known simply as Council of Seven frequently disrupt chain of command by reorganizing squads and deploying them with various weaponry and even contradictory orders. This rigorous and unpredictable style of management, which underlines personal choice of warrior and personal skill of commanding NCO has made legion very adaptive to various cultures and battlefields. Despite horrendous losses, mission must be accomplished and usually Legion has been able to reach its goal.
Members of Legion can be divided into three loose ranks. Youngest members of Legion, recruits, which have not undergone all phases of transformation are deployed into lightly armed groups of infiltrators, spies and guerillas. These troops have expertise with many weapons and methods of Imperial Guard and have proven to be relentless and relatively cowardly. Pride of heroism seems to be nonexistant, as these troops usually flee or retreat from battlefield. This behaviour is not scorned, because they are assumed to become better and braver soldiers by learning from their mistakes. These younger marines also perform many menial tasks of legion.
Second rank, brothers consists mostly of fully trained and equipped marines. These veterans teach and lead younger brethren in battle and indoctrinate them with beliefs of Chapter. Becaus of very limited resources in both material and manpower, every marine must proficient in all possible tasks of legion. These include all possible specializations as much as skill of operating and maintaining of Chapters very limited and worn supply of vehicles.
Highest rank is simply known as The Council, whichs makes all strategic decisions of Legion. Daily life is mostly performed by recruits, which leaves these hardened and skilled experts able to consider their overall strategy and perform tasks of utmost importance. These hardened veterans have also first access to all battlegear. This trait makes them very invidualistic and clearly marked by their choice of weaponry. Many of these distinguished veterans still battle within Tactical groups, usually carrying some specialized weaponry or bearing their heraldry.
In addition to these ranks there are also some separate specialists and technicians. Mostly members of Obliterator-cult and other, more bizarre factions.
Beliefs:
Omega Legion has no illusions about their origin, purpose or identity. They believe that they are last true space marines and they must also prove it. They are rightly proud of their skills and eagerly test their skills against other marines. Millennia of hardship has formed their ideals into bitter, merciless efficiency, which demands not only material victory, but also total support from planets they have been able to submit. Because their propaganda is very efficient, these worlds have been very difficult to reclaim to Imperial management.
Omega Legion thinks itself as misunderstood memento from times before Heresy. They still wage their own Great Crusade and conquer worlds to humanity. They refuse to accept Imperium as sole method of survival and create smaller, more efficiently organized planetary regions. It is apparent, that Omega Legion admires Ultramarines despite their fierce loathing against revered sons of Guilliman they respect their organization and ability to control massive realm of Ultramar as their own. It is also noticeable, that technological status of worlds conquered bt them has usually increased dramatically. Apparently infrastructure of Omega Legion is very efficient and they are also eager to teach these methods forward.
Religious practises of Omega Legion are nonexistant. They have no chaplains or demagogues of any kind and they refuse to participate to any religious ceremony. This reluctant attitude has several times revealed them as unimperial heretics, even though they are perfectly able to masquerade themselves as Imperial troops. Eyewitness-reports indicate, that they are stern and silent during action and yell only necessary orders and warnings.
Battlecry:
As crusading Chapter Omega Legion has developed almost unique battlecry. Their helmets are equipped with efficient amplifiers, which broadcast constantly subsonic resonance. This almost inaudible sound creates nausea, headache and other unpleasant physical symptoms. As Omega Legion suffer these effects themselves, they use these potent weapons only in dire emergency. It is rumored, that Omega Legion owes its infamous pessimism and stubbornness from long exposure to these sounds.
Chapter Master:
Current Master of this secretive Legion is known as Red Fredo. Under his leadership, Omega Legion has taken more active and aggressive strategy. They have repeatedly fought against Imperial organizations and proven to be even more headstrong and efficient. Red Fredo has been spotted on many battlefields and his way of fighting has proven to be near foolhardy. Under his management Omega Legion has performed some of the most daring raids against strongly defended Imperial outposts and military installations. These attacks have been similar to raids performed by piratical eldar. Unlike other heretic chapters, Omega Legion apparently avoids creation of excessive collateral damage and civilian casualties and Red Fred has personally shown to be strict, but just and reasonable leader. It is great shame, that marine of such sense of responsibilty and common sense is not our ally.
Most noticeable Fredos deed of valor was made on noxious battlefields of Vistae Prime. This system of four planets had refused to pay its tithes. Silver Hawks-chapter was sent to investigate and three independent Inquisitors arrived as well. As loyalists approached and noticed defensive systmes unoccupied they launched immediate attack towards planetary infrastructure. As Vistae was in state of peace, attack had devastating results. Hastily gathered defenders were unable to defend their planet, which fell within weeks. Inquisitors were convinced, that Vistae Prime was secretly harboring chaotic cults and they started ruthless campaign, which was meant to expose it. Several million civilians and soldiers were summarily executed and interrogated as Inquisition started its ruthless task. After one week of investigation, it appeared that over 90% of planetary population was members of cult despite having no visible evidence of cultist activity.
During eleventh day after initial defeat, Omega Legion arrived to this devastated planet. They had heard defenders plea of aid and had decided to respond to it. Filled with righteous anger, Omega Legion attacked with ruthless efficiency and struck Inquisition by surprise. They released over 200 000 soldiers sent to deathcamps and were able to arm them as well. With this increase of numbers, Legion was able to create basehead for their operations. Silver Hawks however had decided to counter-attack. Following battle was merciless and Omega Legion was losing it. Under leadership of Fredo, they used clever ploy to attack their enemies indirectly. As Silver Hawks relied much upon their ability to deploy much faster than Omega Legion, that benefit had to be eliminated. Omega Legion retreated to swamps and forced their enemy to approach them on foot. Legion retreated, left traps and exposed its presence before disappearing again. This tactic finally forced Silver Hawks to deploy their whole detachment to one, decisive battle.
Omega Legion chose to answer their call to battle and took initiative to its hands. Strong attack was launched against highest command. Silver Hawks defended fiercely and Legion was forced to retreat. Silver Hawks pursued and pride, this most treacherous sin struck them: Omega Legion had planned to retreat and force Silver Hawks out from their well-made defences. Trap was sprung and separate detachment, lead by Fredo himself struck to weakly occupied base of Silver Hawks. Silver Hawks were forced to retreat, but they chose not and fell within seconds. Large explosive was left to base and Fredo dispappeared faster than Silver Hawks were able notice.
As Omega Legion retreated to their space ships, Silver Hawks returned to their base to celebrate their victory. As they noticed defeated defenders, they guessed that something was wrong. Following explosion was seen from orbit and destroyed area over 100 kilometers of radius. Without support from Silver Hawks, Inquisition was forced to retreat from Vistae Prime. Damages caused by this short, but bloody war were great on all sides. Silver Hawks had lost almost full company of their battlebrothers, two out of three Inquisitors were apprehended and handed over to planetary goverment, which sentenced them to death by hanging. Omega Legion was forced to stay on Vistae Prime for over a decade before their material losses had been replenished and fallen battlebrothers were at least partially replaced.
Notes:
Omega Legion had despite its small size become great strategic wild card. They are very likely to oppoise Inquisition and other Imperial organizations. Apparently they value independence over loyalty and as such are Excommunicate Traitoris.[/b]
