[epic] Orks vs IG, 3.5k
Lähetetty: Pe 24.03.2006 17:31
This time no special scenario. Just 3500 point game using GT scenario. On one side obviously orks and on other it's the Cadian 83rd. Army size was chosen to be 3500. Army lists were:
Orks, 3500 pts:
Big warband: 4 nobz(warlord), 16 boyz, 8 grots 445
Big warband: 2 nobz, 20 boyz, 12 grots 450
Warband: 2 nobz, 10 boyz, 6 grots, 6 battlewagons 510 BTS goal
Big kult of speed: 12 warbikes, 4 skorchas 350
Uge bliz brigade: 7 gunwagons, 2 gunwagons w/soopagun, 1 gunwagon w/supa-zzap gun, 2 flakwagons 500
Bliz brigade: 2 gunwagons, gunwagon w/supa-zzap gun, 2 flakwagons 235
Stompa mob: 4 stompas w/3 big gunz 300
Fighta bomma sqwadron: 5 fighta bommaz 250
Big Gunzmob: 10 big gunz 225
Big Gunzmob: 10 big gunz 225
Total: 3490
I decided to cut down on infantry for a change as I have been using swarm of infantry armeis lately. Big gunzmobs were oddity as I normally don't use them but I figured I could give them a try. I'll try to get them guard my take and hold objectives. Advancing along if enemy sits back or if it looks like they are going to be mobile I'll try to put them on overwatch to shoot anybody getting close. Bliz brigades and stompas will be operating together with their heavier gunz. Fighta sqwadrons will take care of artirelly or harash mechanised formations.
Imperial guard, 3500 pts:
Core companies:
Regimental HQ: Supreme commander, 12 IG troopers, 7 chimeras, 3 griffons, hydra 675
Infantry company: IG commander, 12 IG troopers, 7 chimeras 425
Support companies:
Tank company: Leman russ vanquisher, 9 Leman russ battle tank, 3 Leman russ Demolisher, hydra 900 BTS goal
Tank company: Leman russ vanquisher, 9 Leman russ battle tank, hydra 700
Support formations:
Storm trooper platoon: 8 storm troopers, 4 valkyries 350
Artirelly battery: 3 basilisk 250
Super heavy tank platoon: Baneblade 200
Total: 3500
Ork comments: That's bloody lot of vechiles! That's bloody fast army! Seems like he reversed his usual infantry heavy IG armies to one well suited for blizkrieg tactics. I'll have to be vary of those vechiles. 2 russ companies in particular will likely prove to be annoyance. Storm troopers were bit of suprise as well since they haven't been used for a while here. Good thing is that I don't have to face lots of artirelly. Bad news is that 23 russes is no easy force to remove...

Scales are extremely poor but maybe you can get small idea. H's are hills and F's are forrest. Ork side was south on the map.
Objectives:
Ork bliz objective was on extreme left. Their take and hold objectives OTOH were on right. One on top of hill on right side of it and other on the ground just left of said hill. Imperial guard bliz objective was far right from ork POV while take and holds were front of forrest on either side.
Deployment:
With no objective near the forrest I had to change my plans a bit. That hill instead came as my main camp with both foot warbands, both gunzmobs and stompa mobs taking camp on it(cramped!). Bliz brigades were behind that hill as well while remaining warband and kult of speed were deployed on left to curve around the forrest.
For Imperial guard the right side(as usual ork POV) was held by both russ companies supported by storm troopers. Then regimental HQ, infantry company and finally baneblade and artirelly battery guarding Imperial's right flank.
Turn 1: Strategy roll won and kept by orks.
First up. Gunzmob on left side of hill went to overwatch(seems like IG will be rushing toward me faster than vica versa!). Fighta bommaz then went for ground attack mode...But where? That's the question. Basilisk battery provides Imperial guard bit of artirelly power which might be usefull to remove. Blowing chimera or two OTOH would be slowing the host down. Then there's those valkyries...And of course leman russes...
In the end I opted to head for valkyries. 3 AP5+ and rocket pods ain't nice combination. This of course meant going straight into flak but I figured that attempt to get rid of those skimmers would be worth it. 1 ork plane was shot down and in return...Just 2 storm trooper stands. Somebody is having a laugh at my expense it seems.
Imperial guard replied with marshal from storm trooper platoon. Order was however failure so they opted to regroup as part of hold action. All BM's were removed but atleast they weren't moving anywhere.
Second gunzmob then went to overwatch with help of supreme commander reroll. No retain this time. Basilisk battery then sustain fired at kult of speed lying directly ahead. 2 bike stand were removed.
Stompa mob then doubled forward top of hill and fired at smaller russ company. To ork cheers one vechile was blown apart! Take that! Baneblade then doubled forward toward take and hold. Range was still long but nevertheless battlecannon took out another stand of bikes. Bike swarm tried to get some sort of revenge and doubled into side of said baneblade but I misjudged range and those who did get within 15cm were promptly suppressed. Ah well.
First russ company then doubled forward straight top of stompa mob. Straight into teeth of left gunzmob(friend said he ain't affraid of ork firepower). This proved less than good idea when 2 leman russes were blown apart. Hah! Take some ork firepower will you? Then hail of battle cannons, demolisher cannons, plasma cannons and lascannons fired. At the end of it whopping 15 hits were scored but stompas showed why they have REINFORCED armour as only single stompa fell to victim of Imperial firepower.
Warband #2 doubled into shelter of forrest, ready to attack either of take and hold objectives. Hail of shooting from boyz at the edge went against baneblade and by stroke of luck one even penetrated armour! I rolled with high hopes for that 6 but didn't blow that thing at once(I have some serious dislike at baneblades). Atleast it was damaged and had BM's...
I was pressing his right flank so infantry company doubled and deployed front of baneblade. 4 chimeras went first to provide their armour. Hail of firepower went against kult of speed but out of 21 shots only 2 hit and armour saved one. Hail the bikes!
Second russ company then doubled to side of stompa mob, and again into range of big gunz. This time he claimed my luck can't hold and infact it didn't. 4 hits but no failed armour save rolls. Bugger. Yet another stompa was blown apart which was more than enough to break the formation. They headed toward forrest instead.
Uge bliz brigade doubled alongside warband and fired at smaller russ company. Soopaguns failed to do anything, the 3 hits against russes being saved despite being MW. Supa-zzap gun promptly missed. Big gunz atleast brought one down.
Regimental HQ then doubled and settled on between russ companies. Again 4 chimeras were up front with rest behind. All but autocannons were out of range and autocannons all missed.
For orks small bliz brigade doubled alongside other and shot at small russ company. Everything bar one big gun missed and armour deflected weak shot easily. All units barring foot warband and battlewagon formation had been activated by then. I decided to make extreme risk and MARCHED with the battlewagons. 3+ roll was passed and bigger russ company found swarm of orks within 5cm of them. Needless to say Imperial player gulped and I prayed, nay BEGGED to win strategy roll next turn :-D
Foot warband then doubled toward smaller russ company. Boyz and nobz went toward russes while grots formed sorta rearguard against regimental HQ just in case it opts to engage(try scything through 8 stands of grots first!).
Rally phase: Kult of speed rallied. So did warband with warlord. Stompas failed to rally and went back of forrest. For Imperial Guard all formations that needed to rally did rally.
Comments from Orks: Overall good turn. I managed to delay storm troopers, pushed forward with large warband in the forrest and Imperial Guard moved, probably bit too rashly, straight forward and were promptly surrounded by swarms of orks. If I can win strategy roll I can turn their blizkrieg into rout before they get to say ”whoops!”.
Turn 2: Strategy roll won by...ORKS! Battlewagon warband charged into the close combat against russes. However to Orks despire only one leman russ fell to victim of orks. 4 boyz and 2 grots stands were removed in return. With outnumber on orks side and BM's on Imperial it was 4-4 for modifiers...Roll off was 9-8 for Orks and Russ company retreated but with annoyingly light casualties.
Orks continued pressing forward and assaulted second russ company as well. This time however no russ was destroyed though hydra was blown apart. In return whopping 10 stands of orks were removed. Luckily most of casualties were from regimental HQ so the 8 grots were among casualties. This time however roll off, despite +1 advantage for orks, ended up in Imperial victory! OUCH!
Regimental HQ was grouped up which wasn't exactly healthiest formation with 2 soopaguns looking at them so they tried to advance forward. However despite reroll they promptly failed so just dispersed around, seeking to minimise the casualties in case bliz brigade opens up.
Large warband on forrest then engaged the infantry company with furthest stand of orks even reaching chimera! I designated baneblades into intermingled combat as well, figuring I might be able to get rid of it as well, or break it. Overall combat seemed to end in another disaster for orks but Kult of speed, bless their orks, managed to help with 5 out of 8 casualties caused by orks coming from them. Overall 5 boyz, 1 nob and 1 grot stand were removed from orks while 6 IG troopers and 3 chimeras were Imperial casualties. +1 for ork outnumbering, +2 for BM situation so whopping +6 before roll off. Though Imperium rolled higher the modifiers were just too big and 3 chimeras and 3 troopers were killed while remaining troopers ran back. Orks regroupped around objective, now steadily in ork hands, while sorry remnants from Imperial forces ran toward broken russ company.
Imperial player was hard pressed and needed some drastic moves. Unfortunatly second russ company was near breaking so rather than have it broken easily as well they marshalled while firing at big bliz brigade. 2 gunwagons were blasted apart while all but 1 BM were removed.
Kult of speed tried to double forward but promptly failed it. Reroll was however used as I wanted to silence that artirelly battery. Imperial sorrows mounted up as one basilisk was destroyed and remnants ran back next to russ company.
Things got bit better next though as storm troopers advanced forward. Valkyries opened up with full firepower and together with storm troopers practically annihilated the warband, leaving just 4 battlewagons, stand of boyz and another of nobz left. Obviously they broke and headed into slopes of hill on ork zone.
With this Imperium had used it's activations. Next up uge bliz brigade actually managed to sustain fire straight into small russ company. This time Imperium was in trouble and half the company was blown apart and rest ran back. Central gunzmob managed to overwatch(just for heck of it and now they guard take and hold objectives). Second failed but regroupped. Next small bliz brigade sustain fired at regimental HQ and blew first 3 chimeras. WAAAAAAGH! Atleast(from Imperial POV) fighta bommaz failed to come.
Rally phase: Now Imperium needed some luck...But first Orks. Kult of speed rallied, 1 BM left. Big warband rallied, 2 BM left. Battlewagon warband rallied(not good for Imperium) as did stompas(ditto). Warlord warband rallied with ease. And so did big bliz brigade. Indeed I failed NO activation rolls...
Then for all-important IG rally phase: Remnants of infantry company, failed. Baneblade, failed. Main russ company, rallied. Basilisk, rallied. Small russ company, failed. Regimental HQ, failed.
Ork comments: WAAAGH! Imperial line has been broken for good and rally phase ensured I'm in prime position to capitalise on it. My friend badly overestimated capabilities of his russes and though my warlord embarassingly lost his assault I have stopt his assault in tracks. Now I just need to deliver the killing blow. Let's not get overconfident...
Turn 3: Strategy roll won by orks and kept.
Fighta bommaz screamed in from a sky and launched attack against regimental HQ, the main opposition I still have. Hydra failed to hit a plane and in return all griffons and 2 IG troopers were destroyed. WAAGH!
Storm troopers mounted up in advance action and valkyries flew into flank of warband on ork left. Heavy bolters and multi-lasers opened up and 2 grots and 4 boyz stand were removed in hail of dices(have I said I hate valkyries?). More annoyingly they took control of take and hold objective there.
Big gunz mob which wasn't on overwatch then promptly sustain fired(causing my friend to curse something about me and my stinking luck today
) at the regimental HQ. 5 stands of infantry were removed and I was robbed of 1 more by range! With wall of orks ahead all they could do was back off...
Russ company which had just rallied advanced top of hill and with good line of sight and range fired at the warband. With hail of battle cannons, demolisher cannons, plasma cannons and heavy bolter ork front line died where they stood with 5 grots and 3 boyz stands removed as casualties. Luckily I was still good 2 units from breaking(LOL!). Seeing this basilisk battery sustain fired at them and removed 1 boyz and 1 grot stand. This was enough to break the formation(darn!). They backed off a bit to get range between them and russ company to ease rallying in case there's 3rd turn.
Storm trooper platoon HAD to go so Gunzmob dropped off overwatch and tried to sustain fire at them. Failed but 9 big gunz opened up anyway sending 2 valkyries to ground. One stand of storm troopers was removed as a result. Imperial had again out of activations so rest of turn was orks:
Stompa mob doubled to control my bliz objective. This actually was enough to win the game as I had they shall not pass and defend the flag. I however wanted atleast 3-0 victory so let's see what I can do...Small bliz brigade then doubled alongside valkyries and opened up. End result: 2 destroyed valkyries and 3 stands of storm troopers removed and formation broken.
However I still couldn't get take and hold due to that stinking russ company. So kult of speed charged in. However russ company showed this time its quality and drove the orks away, losing only one tank in the process.
I had hoped to get both BTS and take and hold but now it was one or the other. I decided that in the end Take and hold is probably easier(that BTS goal is still good 11 unit strong) so uge bliz brigade doubled toward russ company and opened fire. This did the trick as another 4 russes were destroyed(okay that was lucky. 1 to soopagun, 1 to supa-zzap gun, 2 to big gunz that needed 6 to hit...). Rest broke. Then all I needed was that battlewagon formation to take control of both objectives so all I needed was to pass 2+ activation roll with SC reroll unused. Piece of cake.
Result:
Orks: Take and hold, defend the flag, and they shall not pass.
IG: None.
So crushing victory to Orks over Imperial Guard! It's been a while since I have won with orks and even longer since I have won this convincingly with them. Reason for victory isn't probably hard to guess. Friend got overconfident in his pair of russ companies and figured that I couldn't take 23 russes that easily out. Especially when both were supported by regimental HQ as well. However when I marched that battlewagon warband suddenly Imperial blizkrieg was lot less safer than it was moments ago...Without reroll from warlord that action was extremely risky but in the end paid off very well. Very risky advance from the friend and very suprising as well. Usually he's Mr. Cautious himself
Dunno what got to him this time. Maybe he had got tired of defensive victories and wanted to crush life out of orks by overrunning them with horde of tanks :-)
For my army stars were the orks in battlewagons but also both of the bliz brigades as they kept blowing up russes thorough the game. Even big gunz hurt when hail of them sustain fires at you...Also the both gunzmob suprised me on their performance though against more defensive army they would have been of lesser use. Still 20 big gunz guarded take and hold objectives nicely and ensured that even if front line is broken he would still have to face something which isn't totally worthless in assault either.
Stompas btw were also great and might just have been what actually won me the game as he concentrated on first turn firepower from both russ companies to those mere 4 walkers. While he broke the company(though only destroyed 2!) that firepower would probably have been better off softening my warbands instead.
Overall he overreached himself on turn 1 and I made him pay from it. I was also helped in this by notably larger activation count which allowed me to surround his units after he had moved.
And just one last WAAAAAAGH!
