Need to sleep in Helsinki
Need to sleep in Helsinki
Hello everybody!
Its been a very long time since I've seen any of you guys. Right now all my miniaturing is lying on the shelf collection dust.
My fiencé Sophie, which some of you already know, is going to Helsinki for a couple of days and we are looking for some place for her
to sleep. She is going to Helsinki to NordiCHI, a conference, as a student volunteer and need to find somewhere to sleep. The timeframe:
Monday 27/10 - Friday 31/10 so she is staying for 4 nights - just a bed/matress is necessary as she is at the conference during most of the day. Don't
need any form of entertainment or planning - just super happy with a place to sleep! =)
The conference is at a small island, Katajanokka (or Skatudden on swedish), which is close to the centre of helsinki.
Is there anybody living in Helsinki which has a sleeping place to spare for one person?
Please answer either here or send a mail to: [email protected]
Thanks so much for your help and please respond as soon as its possible.
Best regards Alfred and Sophie

Hi Alfred (and Sophie)! Long time no see.. (You should visit us more ;) )
I'm sure we will be able to organise this, don't worry.
I will accomodate her if no one else will. I just live in Espoo so the bus tickets would cost a bit extra and I have an angry wife, 3 kids and 2 cats so I think you might want to view this as a last resort. (also there's the surprise pregnancy thing..)
We have a couple of guys living within walking distance of Katajanokka so I'm confident you'll get a great place to stay.

Hi!
While someone living actually in Helsinki would certainly be better, I can provide another option from Espoo. Unlike Tero I have neither angry wife, kids nor cats, but one messy apartment. It takes some 50 minutes to reach Katajanokka from my place by public transport.
Cheers,
Jaakko

Hello Tero, Tatu, Jakko and Henri-Pekka!
Apparently ESPOO is the place to be!!! :-) I am so thankful and I am sure it will be no problem to travel back and forth. Do you also commute back and forth for work/study to Helsinki?
I was now wondering to whom it might be easiest to have me over for the time...or if I should switch inbetween to make it easier for you?? :-)
For the last night (thursday to friday) I have to see how to manage as there is a party at the conference and I am not sure when I am able to come back. Are there some trains going even late at night? Thank you all so very much for being so kind and welcoming. If I just stay at one place - it would be loads of fun to see you all, so maybe we can meet for a beer or something?!
Cheers
Sophie
PS: GreenMeanie's comment translates extremly funny on both swedish and english: "I put the hill already mailii (also in Espoo), I'm sure you do not get brought jonneski." What is that supposed to mean?? You already put a hill there? :D

Re: Need to sleep in Helsinki
Please bear in mind that from downtown helsinki to border of Espoo the distance is about 10km (6 miles). So what we call a 'city of Espoo' is actually a suburb in real world.Sydow kirjoitti: Do you also commute back and forth for work/study to Helsinki?

Re: Need to sleep in Helsinki
"I sent email (from espoo too). So i think she will have a place to sleep" :-D roughly like that. Google translater is awesome. When it was my birthday, my fiance had made me a surprise party, and my friend from england said that the message my fiance had sent via facebook said in one place "juhlakalu saapuu paikalle klo 18" and it was translated "the feast of cock arrives at 18.00" :-D that was hilarious.

Re: Need to sleep in Helsinki
I'm H-P and I am a hill. I guess its up to you, Tero has most entertainment in kidform at his place, Jaakko is an engineer and I'm just a horrible person in general. I don't know about the others but I know that it wouldn't be any problem for me to have you here, theres a guest room for a reason.

If you like kids you can pick one of ours and take it with you when you leave.

Re: Need to sleep in Helsinki
To further explain "mäki" really means a hill, but in this case it was a shorter slang word for "minäkin" meaning me too. It is quite hard to understand this kind of written Finnish =)
And yeah it really isn't that big problem reaching Helsinki from Espoo. We pretty much all travel the trip daily. But anyway if H-P really has a guest room he might have the best accommodation option. I guess it'd best to use email to settle this and possibly some beer-drinking night.

Re: Need to sleep in Helsinki
Yeah, i think an actual bedroom trumps our bed(acting as couch) option, though leppävaara might be easiest to travelling, but getting to helsinki isnt that hard from Espoo from anywhere.
At least, there isnt a shortage for options, so thats a plus.
