Wendigo’s tale, part 4
“So, are we ready?” Crooked, pale, black hooded inquisitor asked as he limped nearer a bench. There were silent, robe wearing person, face looking grim, and hands tied on his sides. His legs were also tied on the bench, and his hand was made of metal, perhaps from steel, but most likely from adamantium, as it shone brightly in the light of torches. This man, tied on that black table, was Wendigo, lieutenant, charged for lying to commissar, and spreading false rumours of himself and the Emperor. “Lights.” Inquisitor ordered as he closed the table, and his bionic leg made a high “cling!” sound every second step. “You may not be familiar with our ways of interrogation, but I assure you, they are not gentle. You’d be better to speak truth.” Inquisitor told as he took his interrogation kit from rack on the wall, and opened it showing its contents to Wendigo. “Look. This crooked one is meant to pull blood veins out from your skin, and then we have this small one. This is my personal favourite. It is used to flay recipient’s skin in tiny layers, and then drop some highly sulphurous acids on the flesh; no heretic can sustains such an injury without collapsing. I’m sure you are no exception.” Inquisitor explained as he checked his gear and approached Wendigo with crooked tool in his hand. Light glimmered on the tool, and as it closed Wendigo’s skin, someone knocked the door.
“Who is it!?” Inquisitor asked and dropped his precious tool on the bench and limped to the door. For some kind of a miracle, the crooked tool inquisitor used, dropped straight to Wendigo’s hand, and he picked his chains, but laid still on the bench. As inquisitor came back, Wendigo dropped the tool of his tormentor to floor and acted as nothing had happened. Then, inquisitor picked up his vicious tool, and prepared to pierce Wendigo’s skin. But this time, Wendigo was prepared, and suddenly he stood up, took inquisitors hand on his own, and twisted so strongly that interrogator had to drop his only defence. “Never again try to use those things on me! I am the chosen of the Emperor, and if you must know if I can be trusted, come with me to the battlefield and judge me there.” Wendigo stared inquisitor with hate in his eyes and angry look on his face. Inquisitor almost collapsed as his arm was twisted behind his back, and then he finally could open his mouth after recovery of surprise attack of his prisoner. “No, don’t hurt me. I will come and see your acting on the battlefield, but beware; I can be more ruthless than any commissar can. “He spoke quickly and was relieved as Wendigo released his grip from his arm, and relaxed. But how could he escape from his interrogation bench? How could it be possible? This was a question inquisitor had to get answered.
“Now, we must go to commissar Renay and get to our transport, people of Mendips are waiting.” Wendigo told as his interrogator, inquisitor Vunien gathered his battle gear and called his henchmen. “I’m ready.” He said with silent voice, and took his weapons from dusty bookshelf. Then, Vunien and Wendigo marched through doors opened by Vunien’s servitor, and stepped to a great hall, where six of Wendigo’s finest where waiting. There was huge, black and silver coloured transport ship waiting them on the field, and three whole platoons of guardsmen waiting for a transportation to orbit and then to Mendips. They marched in, firs went Wendigo, then Vunien and his servitors, then first platoon of Wendigo’s finest, fists of steel. Then marched rest of platoons, and Hesperonis class transport ship ignited its engines. “Wendigo, sir, do you know what kind of enemy we are going to fight?” Sergeant of the squad which was fighting side by side Wendigo against the wraithlord, asked. “Well, Mendips as is near the Eye of terror, I would guess that there’s some kind of mutants and traitors there. But you’d better to prepare for worst.” And then Hesperonis lift off and rose to orbit and glided towards Mendips, a planet infected with terror of Nurgle, one of the four powers.
-----After two weeks of space travel-----
“Ok my men! This is it! This is what Emperor meant us for. Purge entire worlds from evil, also know as chaos. Remember, no matter how numerous or disgusting they are, they’re still mortal. No matter if the blood they bleed is red or green or even black, they nevertheless bleed blood, and so can die. Aim for their heads! For the Emperor!” Wendigo shouted as Hesperonis draw nearer its target, a planet called Mendips and prepared for landing. Every guardsman, except Wendigo’s personal platoon, fists of steel, was nervous as rumours of traitors and mutants and daemons tainted by chaos had spread rapidly and everyone wondered what kind of horrors they would meet. Fists of steel platoon tried to calm their comrades down, but it was hopeless, fear had spread to minds of everyone. Because of this, sergeant Cobalt went to command headquarters to meet their leader, lieutenant Wendigo. “Halt, sergeant, you may not pass. Lieutenant Wendigo is currently occupied by more important matters.” Inquisitor Vunien emerged from nowhere and stopped sergeant on his place. “My mystics are preparing him; do NOT enter when both of us are in there. You and my servitors shall guard this door.” And inquisitor stood inside, and left sergeant alone, or not alone, but with two mindless servitors.
“So, now you can’t escape, and I have assured that no one distracts our little operation.” inquisitor Vunien explained as he closed a table, on which Wendigo was laying again. He took some equipment from his belt, and stuck some of them into Wendigo’s ears, and penetrated his skin with others. “I now go into your neural system and move your memories to this data slate for further investigations.” And how lieutenant Wendigo screamed! “No, no, mother noooo! Don’t leave me here!” “Oh, great lord, please let me live! I will always serve you!” “Men of Cadia! Follow me” Lieutenant Wendigo’s head flung from side to another as he screamed his worst nightmares and worst memories aloud, and as he shouted them, Vunien stored them to his data slate. Then, the old but still strong in mind inquisitor pulled his vicious tools away, and woke lieutenant Wendigo. “Ok, you have passed, nothing extremely serious came up. I shall research all the information you gave me during our landing procedure and your camp establishment. Have you anything to say?”the grim-faced inquisitor asked. “No, your honourable existence, may the Emperor bless thee.” And then Wendigo made the sign of Aguila, and dismissed himself.
Lieutenant Wendigo marched away from his office room, where the painful interrogation ritual was held, and encountered sergeant Cobalt immediately after his door. “Sir! What did happen there? I, I heard screaming, and many horrible things, but that inquisitor ordered me to stay outside. Are you alright? Oh, and I had real business here too. Men are extremely nervous down there, except fists of steel, of course. I thought you should come and try to cheer them up a little again.” “No my son, I shall speak to them in our camp after you have built it. Events inside are not your business but you did the right thing as you stayed outside. You would have risked Vunien and me too. “Wendigo calmed his inferior and headed for armoury. “Follow me, and call every sergeant on board to armoury.” He ordered as he walked. “Yes sir!” At the armoury, when every officer and sergeant available was there, Wendigo held his speak. “My comrades, we are heading towards a planet called Mendips, a planet infested by chaos, especially by followers of Nurgle. A tough fight is coming, and we have only ourselves, and few platoons of planetary defence force, so we are outnumbered. But, our only mission is to hold our ground long enough for our allies, the Dark Angels chapter to come and purge the evil. They are approximately one week away from us, so we’re going to fight a long time. This is our plan: we occupy this great upland area over here, and establish our control station and artillery there. After that, we send some armoured fists to purge the area around this plateau and then we just wait for daemons and traitors to come. I have some weapons and gear for you over here.” Wendigo finished, and shut down his holo-projector. Then he opened a big, black, finely wrought chest, and gave every officer a sabre, crackling with blue fire. “Use these well, they’re our regiments most revered treasures, and everyone who lost his sabre, will be judged by commissar Renay. Now dismiss.”
“Knock, knock” somebody knocked the door, and commissar Renay opened. “Commissar Renay, I have scanned the mind of lieutenant Wendigo, and it appears to me that his and his men, ‘the fists of steel’, story is correct, sir.” Inquisitor Vunien reported. “If you wish to hear my opinion, lieutenant Wendigo might even be the chosen one, blessed by the Emperor himself. As you know, his deeds are truly great for a man of his age and experience, and some of his deeds would be impossible to even members of adeptus astartes. And, most importantly, that force field that protected him from that bright lance shot was purely of mundane origin. His medallion that he said made it is just a beautiful jewel, nothing more, nothing less. So, my answer to this is it was the Emperor himself that protected Wendigo that day.” Vunien continued. “Are you hundred percent behind your theory? It’s almost heresy. The Emperor would never bless one ordinary man in such a way. This theory is really hard to believe no matter the facts.” Commissar Renay asked, and as inquisitor Vunien nodded, he started his litany of execution. “In the name of our ever living and always vigilant Emperor, I hereby deem you as a heretic and bringer of blasphemous thoughts. For your crimes, and to save your soul from the ruinous powers, I will execute you.” And commissar Renay pulled the trigger. Blood splattered on the walls, and on the face of Renay, as Vunien dropped to floor.
