The Indoctrination

Governor Andett looked down from the high balcony.

Below him, tier upon tier, row upon row, the neophytes sat in the semidarkness of the auditorium, their pale faces and sweaty skins lit only by the flickering glow coming from the silver screen hanging above them.

As Andett reached out further, he could see the neophytes had been bound and chained to their metallic seats that had little in common with conventional chairs. Over their naked bodies and heads run tightly wound wires, connected, here and there, by a chromed jack into their mortal coils. The connections were moist with fresh droplets of blood.

But it was the eyes of the neophytes that worried the governor most. For they were agog, nonblinking, staring focusedly at the silvery screen and the violent images upon it.

Oh yes, the screen. Governor Andett had watched the ongoing movie for a few moments, but had had soon to look away. For the images upon the screen had been violent in the extreme. Dead or dying xenos. Space Marines destroying the enemies of mankind. Ripping them in close combat, or mowing them down with point blank bolter fire. And added to this was the sound of the said atrocities, blaring out from loudspeakers secreted around the auditorium.

The neophytes were not enjoying the show any more than he did, though. For below Andett, a low chorus of wails, curses, mutterings and cries arose in strangely sedating sound waves. Now and then, a neophyte would start to scream incoherently. Then, few servitors would appear, unbind the unlucky neophyte and drag him who knew where. The governor had seen it happen twice already, and he had been in the auditorium for only five minutes or so.

And again, in the darkness below, one of the young inductees was broken. The servitors rushed in, and took hold of the shaking and screaming lad. The boy tried to get away, then, and turned towards Andett. For a heartbeat, Andett had a full frontal of the neophyte. The sight was too much for him. He gagged, and rushed towards the exit.

'You found the show unsettling?'

Governor Andett looked up to the speaker. The apothecary, his guide, had a cruel smile upon his bloodless lips.

'It is an atrocity,' whispered the governor. 'Those are our boys, our brightest young you are brainwashing there. Aye, brainwashing! And worse! I saw the mutilation...'

'Dear governor, I see you truly are offended,' spoke the apothecary, not a whit of emotion in his dry voice. 'And I apologize. But I stress you that what we do here is authorized by the Emperor himself, and moreover, the same is done to neophytes in every Space Marine indoctrination center in the galaxy.'

'But, but that is monstrous! I cannot believe...'

'No. But you see, it is all neccessary if we are to make our soldiers equal to their future tasks. They have to love war, and nothing else. NOTHING else, understand?'

'And that is why you cutt off their, their wedding tackles?'

'Wedding tackles? Oh! I see! A very humorous name for genitals! I shall have to remember that one! And yes, that is the reason.'

'But what of the testosterone? Surely the removal of the said...'

'We have additional glands installed into our bodies to make up for it. So as to get us really wizzed up. Humorously enough, we make these glands from the very testicles we cutt off from them!'

The governor did not seem to find this very funny. He went a deep shade of green, and was violently sick. Again. Once he had recovered, he pressed on with his questions.

'What of the movie in there? I cannot see it making the neophytes love war. They did not seem to be enjoying the scenes that much...'

'Oh, they weren't! Not yet. But in time, they will. You see, we have wired our way to their pleasure centers. And every time they see an enemy of mankind killed on screen, we send a jolt of electricity down to the said centers. It is painfull, in the beginning, extremely so, but in due time, their bodies will accommodate what is happening to them, and so, the pleasure centers will start firing up on their own whenever the neophyte kills or sees an enemy killed. It is quite clever, is it not?'

'But is it really neccessary? I mean surely lectures, like they give in PDF...'

'Hah! Lectures! Indeed? Pray tell, governor, do these lectures give your PDF troopers the ability to get pleasure from a kill? And to make them addicted to the said pleasure in such measure, that they will seek to kill all and every enemy they see? I think not! But I'll let you in on a little secret here: We did it by lectures, a long time ago. Before the Heresy, in fact. Which, I presume, is why the Heresy could happen in the first place...'

'Heresy? I fear I do not follow you...'

'No, of course not. You would not know of it. It is part of the secret history of our order.'

'Oh.' The governor went quiet for a while. Then a question occurred. 'Please, could you tell me why have you shown, and told me, all this? I thought it honour to be invited here, but now I do not know what to think...'

'Ah! I wondered when you would come to that! Well, the reason is simple. It is the opinion of the high command that you are a way too accommodating governor. A man of peace and a man of trade and so forth. Just to give an example of your lax rule over this planet, you let our people trade with xenos, no less, even though you have been told, repeatedly, not to do so...'

'What I have done, I have done for my people. And they are prospering...'

'Your people? Governor, these are not your people. They belong to the Imperium. They are not yours to lead. They are ours.'

'And now you want to bully me to becoming your puppet? Using our tortured boys as a blackmailing leverage? I must say, you do not know me as well as you like to think, sir!'

'Oh, but I do! For you see, I did not invite you here to bully you. I invited you here to break you. Servitors, grab him!

Governor Andett tried to away, but to no avail. There was nowhere to run. The marine base was alien to him, and the servitors were everywhere. Soon, he was caught and sedated. Last thing he heard, before passing out, was the cruel laughter of the apotheracy.

When governor Andett came to, he found he could not move. To his horror he found that he had been stripped, and bound into a metallic rack. There were pinpricks of pain, everywhere along his bared skin. A feel of wires, running everywhere over his form.

The air around was humid, yet chilly. A noise of battle was about him, and as his eyes came slowly into focus from the darkness of sleep, he could see the screen, above him.

Upon the screen, a marine stuck his fist unto the face of an eldar in a shower of blood. With the scene, a jolt of orgastic pleasure whipped through Andett's body, making his back arch and his whole body shiver. Another sight of bloody mayhem, and another jolt of pure joy.

Andett groaned. He tried to blink, but found he could not. His eyes had been bind open! And not only his eyes. For his head, too could not be removed from the horrifying scenes afore him.

Suddenly, the view was mercifully blocked by a dark shape. The apothearcy. The marine doctor had something glinting in his hands. And a grin upon his cruel visage.

'Hello, governor,' said the grim figure. 'How are you enjoying the show? Ah, do not answer, I'll not bother you for long. I'll just make some adjustments to your physique with this laser scalpel here. Do not worry, it'll not hurt a bit!' And with that, the apotheracy kneeled down in front of the hapless governor.

Realizing what was about to happen, governor Andett started to scream.

Jos tämän tarinan tapahtumat ovat totta mariinien värväyksessä... brrr... Mitä kauemmas saan omat sotilaani näistä hulluista sen parempi...

Täytyy kyllä todeta että... että... *****! Tämä oli parasta mitä olen täällä Sotavasarassa IKINÄ lukenut! Hienoa kuvailua ja kaunista kieltä, kaikin puolin täydellinen teksti joka voisi puolestani olla vaikka Games Workshopin omista codexeista (vaikka Imperiumi ei tällaista sallisikaan codexeissaan julkaistavan, paljastaa vähän liikaakin...)

Jatka, hitto soikoon, hyvää tekstiä! Ei ehkä juuri tällä päähahmolla, mutta kuitenkin. Hienoa... hitto soikoon...

Ihan hyvä tarina oli, mutta tuo "Hihihii, leikataan sulta killuttimet pois" on vähän kulunut idea.

no joo... Harvoin viittii kirjoittaa tällä tavalla vakavasti. Huumorin kirjoittaminen kun on paljon hauskempaa. Ja vaativampaa.
Tarinan inspiroi elokuva Manchurian Candidate. Se jossa on Denzel Washington. Kannattaa ehdottomasti kattoa. On nimittäin aika sairas!

Jaa-a, onkohan koko ihmiskuntaa elossa enää 25000 vuoden jälkeen. Mutta jos on, niin evoluution on tehnyt jo aika harppauksen eteenpäin, ja se, mitä me silloin olemme, on yhtä erilaista meihin verrattuna kuin mitä me apinoihin verrattuna. Mikäli siis emme regressoidu takaisin karvaisiksi apinoiksi.

Mutta jos ajatellaan evoluutiota eteenpäin, niin parin tuhannen vuoden päästä me puhumme kaksi kertaa nopeammin kuin nyt, olemme kaikki yli kaksimetrisiä ja meillä on tietokoneita ja nanobotteja keho täynnä. Eli kehityksen kannalta emme missään tapauksessa voisi olla sellaisia tavallisia nykypäivän ihmisiä 40K ajalla. Tässä GW on mennyt vikaan. Mutta eipä heitä siitä voi moittia. Evoluution laskeminen mukaan tarinaan olisi tehnyt heidän maailmastaan ihan liian oudon.

Hoi, hoi! Ei evoluutio noin nopeasti toimi, se vie vuosimiljoonia kehittyäkseen niin kuin kuvailit. Lisäksi ihmisillä on tuohon avaruuden valloitukseensa asti asiat niin hyvin ettei meidän tarvitse kehittyä yhtään mihinkään suuntaan, joten evoluutionopeutemme hidastuu lähitulevisuudessa, paitsi kehitysmaissa joissa alkaa nälkä kasvattaa superihmisiä jotka kestävät janoa, nälkää ja fyysistä kipua yli-inhimillisesti. Näistä tehdään ensimmäiset avaruusmariinit aikanaan!

Mikäli siis emme regressoidu takaisin karvaisiksi apinoiksi.

Näitä "tarinoita" lukiessa tulee ensimmäisenä mieleen että tuo regressio on jo pitkälti yli puolenmatkan - ei ehkä karvoituksen mutta ainakin aivokapasiteetin suhteen.

Tarina oli oikeasti mielestäni aivan maino, eikä jäänyt niin kerronnassaan kuin missään muussakaan jälkeen muista Vasaraan postatuista tuotoksista. Hullukoiran tekeleitä vain aliarvostetaan kun täällä Suomessa on pääasiassa näitä englantia taitamattomia ummikoita jotka eivät ymmärrä, ja se mitä he eivät ymmärrä, ei VOI olla hyvää!
