Full metal jackass
Chapter One
05.00
Why do I still look at the clock when I wake up?
After all, I have been in space for two weeks now. And there is still two weeks to our destination. As I start to put my uniform on I thank myself that my contract is only for two years. Thomas has been a spacer his whole life. I always think that after two years I can get back to Verditan. I miss my friends in the academy. Curses. How the hell I did delute myself to stole those explosives with Tancred. Because of him I am now here. But I sould have know that chief instructor must have know that every cadet under his eyes will do something nasty in the final day of graduation.
And I think we were not the firsts ones to get kicked in the last day.
Suddenly my vox started to scream:"Wake up boss! It is my rest turn now." It was Waldre. Last member of our tree men security team on Oseanic. It was an old ship. I like that the ship had a name and not a just numbers like the companys newer ships. But the best part was that the Oseanic went under heavy modernization in the last century and so it was a equipped with inter vos-system and all sorts of awsome accessories.
But the Oseanic's greates flaw, the reason I was hired, is the ship's crew. All of them are from the system's only hive world Verditan VI. They are agressive thiefs from the underhive, escaping the local law. Whatever the reason they are here I, Thomas and Waldre were hired to keep them under some sort of control. And then there was the captain. He is in he's fiftys. But he is also an alcoholic. A very bad alcoholic. I don't think he will live another decade. But he has a higly trained command crew that will take the ship there if the captain won't. In any case I should thank him for employing me.
I had never been offworld before our launch two weeks ago. Being on a spaceship and walking in these claustrophobic corridors is making me depressed. The fact that makes my work even more miserable. And when I patrol the endles maze of hangars I have nothing to do but to think over and over again why did we get caught in that day.
"Hey it's the amasec patrol! Hide your bottles!". Someone shouted and laughed greviously. They had invented all kinds of nicknames. It was my first day at work. In the spacedock before the launch of Oseanic the captain had arranged a shooting range. I think that he wanted the crew to know their new security officer. I hadn't had ever problems with shooting so I started to take down the targets.
I had personally overseen the purchase of my new service pistol as well as other weapons and armours that I insisted my team should have. I did preform quite well might I say. However, our glorius captain wanted to show us his know-how and markman skill. But ten years of continually drinkin had taken their toll. The captain almost shot a nearby mechanic. After this event I had a hour long debate with the captain about his serious or non-existing drinking problem. After all, this drunken son of a grox is commanding the ship where I work. Soon after this rumors started to spread about what I happened in his cabim.
The time is 20.47.
My 16 hours long watch will end soon and the rest period is about to begin.
Once again I take a shortcut through the transport storages. Our current cargo consist mostly some sort of black stones which are engraved to fashion a rectangle. The whole ships is full of them. I think they are something very rare material. Why else we would ship them to Verditan VI. I use my card to open the door. And what do I see? The same spartan chamber which I left 16 hours ago. I know it is a luxury in a spaceship of this size, but still it is depressing. It is bearly big enough to be fitted with the bed where I sleep. Even the datamonitor, the only bright thing in this ship, looks more repulsing than ever. Once again I don't eat anything. It just don't feel I would need food.
As every night before, I stared my photograps many hours before the sleep conquered me.
Chapter Two
After fwe hours of rentless sleep the datamonitor turns into lightshow like some bloody commercial.
"What is it Daniel?"
"The captains wants you to the bridge immediately."
"I will be there in a sec.'" And just as unpredictably the transmission had started, it also ended without any warning. But the face of the captains aide told me to hurry so I didn't bother myself with the fact that he had woken me.
And the time was 23:34.
When I arrived to the bridge I saw that captain himself had just woken and to my great suprise he hadn't started to drink. So far at least.
"Ah, there you are. I hope Daniel didn't wake you. We have a real situation here. Unidetified ship is chasing us. It's really fast and will catch us soon."
"How long sir?"
"About 30 minutes. Because they dont answer to our messages we have a reason to belive that they are agressive and must proceed according to that scenario."
"What do they want from us? Who they are sir?"
"They are possibly after our cargo. Who they are, we have no idea. Arm the mens and prepare to hold them off. We activate the emergency beacon and pray someone will see it."
We equiped ourselves in the armoury as the captain was preaching the others through the ship's vox.
Now my farsight paid itself off. Since I had insited that we sould have proper equipment we would have a chance against the pirates. Flak armours, shotguns, laspistols, we must have looked like some PDF soldiers when we arrived to the starboard loadingbay carrying boxes of pistols and ammunitions. Even though the actul crew haves 20 members, I think we could beat them if they start a fight after the pirates are taken care of.
"Listen up! We will be waiting them here until we know where they will strike. Their ship is smaller than ours so we will have superior numbers."
As I expected, their faces were grim, but they brightened as we shared the pistols. But they knew how to use it. That fact didn't make too happy.
"Is this your first battle?" I asked.
"Your excited, aren't you?" Waldre asked nerveously.
”This is my first chance to show that all those months in the academy wasn't for nothing"
”But this is live action. Not a shooting range. There are going to be bodies.” Thomas protested.
”But we aren't the ones will be roasted. It's that mob.”
”So you are using them as a meat shield?”
”Yes. I think that many of them have done enough crimes to deserve a death sentence.”
”And how are you to decide that?”
After I had speaked mine mind Waldre and Thomas decided not to continue futile argument and I retreated into a embarrased silence.
Chapter Three
"Enemy shuttle closing fast in starboard side."
"Stay where you are! We must wait that they drill the hole."
Few moments later the vibration stopped and we started to run towards the expected hullbreach.
"Waldre, take cover behind that container. Thomas and I will take this position. They will be here in any sec."
Everyone was running and trying to find a good spot. I was suprised. They were excited just like me.
I hope the mood will be the same when the shooting starts.
I sensed that the air was still filling the huge space that was sucked empty just one moment ago.
”Someone turn off these lights. The darkness will give us additional cover.”
"Gakkers are here! Party time!"
And the shooting started. From the darknes blue laser started to whip our position and scores of men took hit. Thomas's armour was penetrated by multiple hits and he falled heavily. In blind rage I aimed my pistol and fired to the direction of their helmet lights. In an instant it was answered with lasers. I took cover behind a container and tried to grab Thomas without exposing myself. When I managed to get his body to cover he was already dead.
Pirates were coming from my left, using the maintaince entrance trying to get behind us. Against my survival instinct, I started to run towards to catwalk above the crane control, from where I could use my shotgun. But when I climbed the stairs up I saw that I was not alone. I suspected the he had saw me and I hit the deck hurting my head in the process. But he was lobbing grenades between the containers where our mens where. Using my opportunity I aimed my pistol and several of my shots hit him. Below me the fragged pirate's companions opened fire as I ran towards to other side of the catwalk. But the guy wasn't dead and when I was atop of him, he knocked me down on my face. The blood started to bleed from my broken nose and I nearly lost my consciousness. But realising that the man wanted revenge I pushed the pain off my mind and jumped on my feet. But I was staring the barrle of his pistol. By a desperate punch I managed to avoid the blue laser. But my victory was short lived when he hit my face with his shoulder pad. The last thing I remembered was the white symbol in his shoulder pad, a bar which was crossed by tree lines.
Chapter Four
After an strange mix of dreams and memories I finally opened my eyes. Slowly my eyes adapted in the lights that had been turned on. After a few minutes of wondering why my shotgun was glued in to the ceiling I noticed that my base was hanging between two too tightly packed containers and I was hanging upside-down. I had been really lucky. Not even that, no one could see me. Otherwise I would be dead by now. After some trying I managed to fall on to the floor. I had lost my pistol but with the shotgun I would be back in business. I decided to rest here for a while and to allow blood circulation to my limbs. My chronometer was broken so I had no idea how long I had been hanging here. When I had gained enough strength I draged myself on the container. The battle had left it's marks in the hangar. The most visible evidences was bodies which were still lying around the hangar. I decided to advance with great caution because I didn't know who had won the battle. But after a quick search I found 14 bodies, including Thomas and Waldre. As for the pirates, I found none of their mens dead. Ten men had beaten the whole crew without any casulties. What kind of soldiers I am dealing with?
What they wanted were the black stones. There was several of them in the hangar waiting for future transportation. But I must admid that they are good. The stones were fitted with a anti-gravitation generators to allow easy movement. What it could also mean is that they knew what we were transporting. Thinking about this I headed to the bridge. I tried to call them several times using my vox but no one answered.
Before I even knew why, my legs stopped and I started to listen. Someone was closing behind the corner and future forward. Seeking a hiding place redied my shotgun as quiet I could. Finally my card opened a door and I dived in. Holding my breath the steps slowly passed by. I waited few more minutes to make sure I would not be spotted. But when I was lying there, trying to stop the bleeding in my nose, shots ranged out somewhere. As the shooting intensified a heard troops running by. Despite of the risks I decided to follw them. If there was shooting there was someone of my side. In the wider corridos there was those black stones waiting to get moved in to the hangar.
Suddenly two pirates were running towards me, firing laser beams on every step.
Someone was chasing them. Seeing my opportunity I aimed my shotgun. My first shot didn't penetrate his armour and ricochets flew all over in the corridor intersection. Laser whip hit the wall and sparks from the broken wires scorched my neck. Because I was not made to withstand laser I streched out my shot and fired blindly behind the corner. As I started to reload one of the jumped on me and I rolled under him. I quick hit to the man's guts and I managed to get on my feet. I tried to kick him but he grabbed my leg and overturned me back on the floor.
”It's here! Time to disappear!” The other shouted when we were fist fighting on the floor. He punched me hard and they ran off. As I garbbed my shotgun my eyes extended in fear. The metal floors and walls were reflecting twisted images. The glow of the green light were growing and I reloaded my gun. And there it was. It was made from metal, in a shape of a skeleton. It was over two metres tall and couldn't stand straight in the confined space. But something in its appearance turned my blood in to boiling adrenaline. Maybe it was the empty and dark eye socket that were staring into my very soul. Or the scythe that was red with blood. Or the green glow that was coming from inside of it. I have little memories what hapened next.
”You have a reservation in hell. Now it is your metal arse that will bleed. Gak this!”
In the depths of the space ship this foolhardy soul faces the metal abomination. Using his weaponry he shoot several shots in close proximity. Raising the mighty warscythe the metal giant stirckes back. He evade the strikes easily, the creature is slow but its gains speed at the same rate as the green glow gets stronger. Pressing his body to its limits he graps the metal hand, gold as ice, and try to bring the monster down. He almost succeeds but he is thrown away. Refusing to give up he raises up and charge. Using the momentum he hit the skeleton head with the gun butt. A crackle and the monster steps back. Fire blazing in his eyes he thrusts the guns barrel deep in to the creatures neck.
He stares straight to the empty eye sockets but sees nothing there. A flash and the green glow fades out.
Suddenly I started to get dizzy. As the mindless rage and adrenaline runs out I start to act as normal. The ship vibrated suddenly. The pirates! They must be leaving. As I turned to leave the green glow was growing again. I turned my head with fearful experession. The metal was reforming. The loose parts were turning in to liquid form. And the liquid moved back to the shape of a head. At this point the desperation won my urge to shoot it's head off. I started to run as fast as I could towards the ship sole escape pod. Doors passing by, shadows growing and the green light won't fade. I thanked myself that I had studied the way to the escape pod. It was meant to captain and his seniors crew members but I kept it likely that he was dead. Finally, pulling the switch and jumpping in. The door closed automatically. Flight course? Anywhere not too near. I passed out when the pod lauched because of the stress.
I was picked up later by another tradeship which had seen our beacon.
What I didn't see was the explosion of the Oseanic when a sole strike cruiser arrived at the scene.

Varsin mielenkiintoinen tarina, herätti paljon mielenkiintoa ainakin minussa. Englanti oli ihan ymmärrettävää, vaikka muutama virhekkin löytyi.

Re: Full metal jackass
Mukaansatempaava tarina.
